Take a closer look at Barbara Hepworth's sculpture Two Forms (Divided Circle), 1969... Hepworth started working with bronze in the 1950s. It offered possibilities for exploring more open and fluid shapes that were difficult to achieve through carving in wood or stone. An example of this can be seen in her sculpture Two Forms (Divided Circle), 1969. Working in bronze also provided Hepworth with the opportunity to produce works on a larger scale that would be suitable for outdoor display, such as

New additions to the 20th century Gallery - two sculptures by Barbara Hepworth, ‘Sleeping Form’ (1971) and ‘Single Form’ (1937) ✨ During the 1930s, Barbara Hepworth began to explore the possibilities of creating abstract sculptural forms. This work had its origins in an earlier series of carved female torsos, but here Hepworth distiled figuratve detal into a sagle, gracefully tapering form. The result is a sculpture of exceptional balance and monumentality that prompts associations with both the

Breathe in and out with Barbara Hepworth's Sculpture Garden. Located a stone's throw from the sea in St Ives, the rustle of the trees and calls of seagulls provide a soundscape for the sunny oasis full of sculptures, creating a space which Hepworth herself called 'a sort of magic'. 🍃 We can't wait to welcome you back when we reopen. | Tate

Today marks the birthday of Barbara Hepworth (1903–1975). She was a leading figure in the rise of British modernism and explored the geometric structure of natural forms. “Dual Form” is abstract while reminiscent of the ancient standing stones called "menhirs" near St. Ives, Cornwall, where the artist resided from 1939 until her death. 🪨 Barbara Hepworth (British, 1903–1975), “Dual Form,” 1965. Bronze; 76 × 54 × 24 1/2 in. Museum Purchase: Building Fund and Dayton Corporation Foundation, 70.21

Few of Dame Barbara Hepworth’s forms are as iconic as ‘Winged Figure I’ 🪽 Conceived in 1957, the sculpture draws together many of Hepworth’s principal concerns: the universal dream of weightlessness, humanity’s place in nature and the Cornish landscape. In 1963, she reimagined the work on a monumental scale for the façade of John Lewis on Oxford Street, a six-meter version seen by half a million people each day. We spoke with Ingram Reid, Director of Modern British & Irish Art, about the dialog

Barbara Hepworth lived during the height of the Space Age, which influenced artists and thinkers globally. In 1962, the telecommunications satellite Telstar was launched into space, and the Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station was established in Cornwall to communicate with it. Hepworth was invited to visit the site in 1963 and recalled: ‘I was invited on board the first one [dish] when it began to go round, and it was so magical and so strange. I find such forms of our technology very exciting and

Barbara Hepworth was born in Wakefield in 1903 and went on to be recognised as one of the most important artists of the 20th century, whose influence continues to be very strong today. Hepworth was keen for her work to be experienced in the open air and to be enjoyed by as many people as possible. We have worked closely with her family and Estate since the earliest years of YSP. In 2003 we collaborated with Tate St Ives on an exhibition to celebrate the centenary of the artist’s birth. YSP is th
