A new look at the Arctic sea ice record reveals that the current ice cover is younger and thinner than at any time in the last 60 years. About 70 percent of Arctic sea ice is now seasonal, forming and melting within one single year. This thinner, younger ice is more susceptible to breakup and warmer temperatures. The record combines data from satellites and declassified submarine sonar measurements and stretches back to 1958. Since that time, Arctic sea ice cover has lost about two-thirds of its

Sea ice update 🌊🧊 Global sea ice hit a record low this winter, NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center report. This year was the lowest Arctic sea ice maximum and the second-lowest Antarctic sea ice minimum. Sea ice forms and spreads across Arctic seas every winter. But in recent years, less new ice has been forming, and less multi-year ice has accumulated. Winter sea ice cover in the Arctic was the lowest it’s ever been at its annual peak on March 22, 2025, continuing a downward trend

Arctic sea ice this year tied for the 10th lowest on record, NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center report. Sea ice—or frozen seawater—forms and melts directly in the ocean and is different from icebergs or glaciers, which come from land-based ice. Every year around September, Arctic sea ice reaches its minimum extent. This year, sea ice reached its yearly minimum extent of 1.78 million square miles on Sept. 10, tying with 2008 as the 10th-lowest on record. Learn more: https://go.nasa.go

Arctic sea ice appears to have hit its annual minimum extent on Sept. 16, at 4.72 million square kilometers (1.82 million square miles). This year's extent is the 12th lowest in the satellite record, according to scientists at NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and National Snow and Ice Data Center: https://climate.nasa.gov/news/3114/nasa-finds-2021-arctic-summer-sea-ice-12th-lowest-on-record/ 🎥: NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio | NASA Climate Change

ICYMI: Earth’s sea ice reached a new low in 2025. 🌊🧊 Every year, sea ice cover in the Arctic grows in the dark and cold of the Northern Hemisphere winter, reaching its annual peak. Arctic sea ice hit its peak on March 22, 2025 at 5.53 million square miles (14.33 million square kilometers), making it the lowest annual peak on record. In the Antarctic, sea ice melts during the Southern Hemisphere summer to its annual minimum extent. This year, Antarctic sea ice retreated to 764,000 square miles

The data are in: Arctic sea ice likely reached its maximum extent for the year, at 14.88 million square kilometers (5.75 million square miles), the tenth lowest extent in the satellite record. This continues a long-term downward trend due to human-caused global warming. This wintertime maximum extent is roughly 770,000 square kilometers (297,300 square miles) below the 1981-2010 average, equal to missing an area of ice slightly larger than Texas and Maine combined. This February 25 maximum also

Each year, NASA works with the National Snow and Ice Data Center to track sea ice as it fluctuates from its minimum extent at the end of spring to its annual maximum extent at the end of winter. Arctic sea ice has been declining for the last several years, as warmer temperatures inhibit its growth and expedite its melt. On March 13, Arctic sea ice reached this year's maximum extent, which continued that trend. Although it wasn't a record low year, it was in the bottom ten maximums seen in the sa
