A closer look at each step of processing fiber into a finished item by clip: First is shearing Rupert the Angora goat. Stella the sheep is next, and then her being shorn. Stella’s wool needs skirted to remove the undesirable parts. The wool is scoured in a pot of hot water to remove the dirt and lanolin then rinsed and air dried outdoors. (Mohair is also cleaned in this way, but it is not shown here) Stella’s wool is a very fine wool, so it benefits from being hand combed first. Mohair from Ango

The very humble beginnings of a flock of sheep, Angora goats, Angora rabbits, and a room full of fiber processing equipment started as the gift of a drop spindle kit from my parents when I was 9. A simple gift but absolutely life changing. Now I love being able to introduce new spinners to the fiber world through our own drop spindle kits.💗 | Cedar Hill Fiber Farm

All the way from Rupert the Angora goat to finished yarn. Mohair is such a luscious fiber, and it blends perfectly with this plum colored wool.💗 | Cedar Hill Fiber Farm

While I chose not to keep exact track of the time spent, I was able to estimate how long each process took to make my wedding dress from a sheep (and Angora goat). To break it down…Shearing Agnes and Timothy - 1 hour. Sorting and scouring the fleeces - 4 hours. Combing and blending the fibers - 24 hours. Spinning the dress and veil thread - 60 hours. Designing and prototyping - 50 hours. Warping the loom - 15 hours. Weaving - 10 hours. Cutting the fabric - 3 hours. Sewing - 15 hours. Crocheting

Angora can be a slippery fiber to spin, so blending it with a little wool gives it a better structure and helps it hold together better. Using a fine wool like Merino will also not compromise the softness of the Angora. This is the blend from the last carding video, and it was a delight to spin.💗 | Cedar Hill Fiber Farm

Can you believe this is the same goat? I always find it crazy how different some of the animals, especially the Angora goats look after shearing. Also one of my favorite characteristics of Angoras is the way their ears flop when they run. Agatha has some especially floppy ones.💗 | Cedar Hill Fiber Farm

Raising Fiber Goats: Everything You Need to Know

Our goats are colored angora goats and are often confused for sheep due to their woolly appearance. However they do not produce wool (sheep fiber) and they do not produce angora (rabbit fiber) as the name may imply. Their specialty is producing mohair. Yes you read that right. All that hair is called mohair. And even if you’ve never “heard” of mohair before, I guarantee you actually have heard of it and/or seen it. Listen closely to the chorus in the famous Elton John song “Bennie and the Jets”.

Dizing more Angora blend roving, because our cold snap is ending and the Angora rabbits are happy to be rid of their hot coats. This beautiful blend is 50/50 Wool and Angora from a Chocolate Agouti Giant Angora, which adds a soft creamy brown color.💗 | Cedar Hill Fiber Farm

Angora fiber is about 9 times warmer than wool. The tiny fibers trap air between them keeping the warm air next to your body. This is also why the Angora rabbits’ favorite season is winter, because they can get quite hot the rest of the year. For anyone wanting to stay extra warm in winter, I definitely recommend an Angora sweater! Even a light one like this one keep will keep you very toasty.💗
