Watching this video of students building elaborate bridge models brought me right back to my university days — my structural analysis and design class with my mentor, the brilliant David Hale. He gave us the simplest materials imaginable: narrow wooden strips, about one inch by one-eighth by two feet. The challenge was direct — build a bridge that could hold as much weight as possible. No aesthetics, no extra materials, just pure design and engineering thought. For research, I went to speak with
