For #cheetah cubs, playing with their siblings and their mother is an important part of life. While the phenomenon is challenging for animal behavior scientists to study, most researchers agree play has an important developmental role for predators, like #cheetahs. By engaging in play with their siblings and their mother, cheetah cubs are strengthening social bonds and cognitive ability, while also developing the skills they will need in the future, as wild predators. If you tune into the Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute's Cheetah Cub Cam, you might see one or two cubs playing in the den. The cubs are starting to play independently. When cheetah biologist, Adrienne Crosier, tuned into the cam in mid-January, she witnessed this female cub rolling around and having a ball in the den all on her own. https://nationalzoo.si.edu/webcams/cheetah-cub-cam | ZooBorns

🐆 Cheetah cub alert! Science first! Scientists at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium have successfully transferred cheetah embryos produced by in vitro fertilization ( to a surrogate cheetah mom for the first time. Two cubs were born Feb. 19 to 3-year-old mom Izzy, though the cubs’ biological mom is 6 1/2-year-old, Kibibi. IVF embryo transfer will help scientists and zoos build the most robust and genetically healthy insurance population of cheetahs

Our cheetah cubs at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute are over a year old! Young cheetahs separate from their mothers around 18 months old, but will form a sibling group until they are a little older. Females are solitary as adults, and adult males live in groups called coalitions. #WeSaveSpecies | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

Last Thursday, Oct. 21, Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute’s cheetah mom Rosalie picked a new "den" for her cubs. She moved them, one by one, to a large clump of tall grasses in her yard. The area was well-protected, and it is not uncommon for cheetah moms to move dens. Animal care staff monitored Rosalie and the cubs but did not intervene, as Rosalie has been a very attentive mother. Unfortunately, was no webcam in the grass so the Cubs’ adoring fans had stayed tuned
