Update 5/17/2025: CDFW observed the mountain lion making its way back into the wild late last night. CDFW is on scene in Santa Clarita, monitoring an approximately 7-month-old mountain lion kitten spotted in a tree in a backyard. Earlier today, homeowners reported the sighting, prompting a response from wildlife officers. Upon investigation, it was determined the kitten likely got separated from its mother, and will look to reunite after dark. CDFW officials plan to wait until nightfall, as the

Two of the wildest animal encounters in California…and they’re only FIVE miles apart. On the hills below Hearst Castle, a herd of wild zebras still roams — descendants of William Randolph Hearst’s private exotic animal collection. And just up Highway 1, the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery explodes with life every winter: birthing season, pups nursing, giant males battling, hundreds of seals hauled out on the beach. It is one of the best free wildlife experiences in the entire state — and y

A protected green sturgeon was rescued from the back of a poacher’s car and safely returned to the water, thanks to a couple of quick-thinking anglers who recognized and reported a poaching crime in progress, along with wildlife officers who acted quickly to save the big fish. The incident began last Nov. 12 at the Clifton Forebay near Tracy. A concerned angler witnessed another man catching and retaining what he recognized as a green sturgeon, which are classified as a threatened species under

CDFW wrapped up wolf capture and collar operations recently in northern California that resulted in a record-number 12 wolves now outfitted with satellite collars on the landscape. That collar data is expected to provide a wealth of information to better understand wolf movements, diet, dispersal, pack formations and help mitigate conflicts with livestock producers. In October, California wildlife officials killed four wolves from an endangered pack following months of conflict with livestock owners in the Sierra Valley, despite the wolves being protected under both the California Endangered Species Act and the federal Endangered Species Act. Now, Women for Wolves founder Anjali Ranadive has launched a petition calling for the use of non-lethal approaches to wolf management in California, arguing that long-term coexistence strategies are essential for succe
