Aug 16, 2019 · Even with local dealers, I'd expect most to be $25-$50 under. Often the buy/sell spreads are fairly close and the margins are thin on gold bullion. This might have been a dealer that doesn't have any place to sell or hopes for large margins (and that people will need to sell and thus accept any offer).

Somebody's rich! So gold dealers make a small profit each time. How does the gold business (or other precious metals) make a sustainable business of this?

Sep 4, 2009 · Gold coins can and do tone. Pure gold 24k shouldn't tone, but most U.S. gold coins are only 90% gold w/ 10% copper. The inclusion of the copper in the mix does allow gold to tone, sometimes quite beautifully, though not as often or as wildly as silver tones. The spotting that is sometimes seen on gold is also due to the copper in the mix.

If you add in the $7 commission from Scottrade, it is $470.30 per ounce, or roughly the same as the spot price. I don't know where I, as a retail customer, can purchase gold coins for less.
