Brave New World star Anthony Mackie caught backlash for a comment he made about the Marvel superhero while promoting the film in Italy.

Mackie, who is taking over the role of Captain America from Chris Evans in the upcoming film, said that he doesn’t think the star-spangled superhero “represents” America.

Anthony Mackie shared a statement on Instagram in response to those who criticized recent comments he made about the Captain America character in which he said, "Let me be clear about this, I'm a proud American and taking on the shield of a hero like CAP is the honor of a lifetime.
