Traffic feels worse than ever on Dubai's roads. The price of housing continues to spike even with new real estate projects being announced almost daily. Caught in the middle are both its Emirati citizens and the vast population of foreigners who power its economy — sparking rare public expressions of concern.

Dubai’s property sales surged nearly 20% in 2024, with transactions hitting a record as the city attracts ever-more residents and investors. Almost $207 billion in real estate was traded last year, according to Dubai Land Department data.

Strains are starting to be felt by the foreign workforce that powers the wider United Arab Emirates and its Emirati citizens. At the top of the list are worries about endless traffic, unaffordable housing and other costs.
