HOUSTON — Houston Astros shortstop Jeremy Peña left Friday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs with left rib soreness. Peña was hit by a pitch on his left side in the second inning. He stayed in the game until Mauricio Dubón entered as a pinch-hitter for him in the fifth. Dubón stayed in and played shortstop.

The Astros' offense produced despite the setback. Designated hitter Victor Caratini broke the ice with a sacrifice fly in the third before catcher Yainer Diaz hit a three-run homer to left center in the same frame. Right fielder Cam Smith then hit another three-run homer to the same area in the fourth, and he reached base four times.
