The AP Top 25 college football poll preseason rankings are now. Texas took the No. 1 spot for the first time in an opening poll, narrowly edging out Penn State by just five points in the closest preseason vote since 1998.

Texas will open the 2025 college football season as the No. 1 team in the Associated Press Top 25. The Longhorns already claimed the top spot in the Coaches Poll, garnering eight more first-place votes than Ohio State. This is the first time they're first in the preseason AP poll.

Preseason polls don't mean much in the end; however, they do help shape the narrative of the season. Looking at the first AP poll of the season, here are the teams that are ranked too high, too low and just right.
