New York conservation officials say a passerby reported seeing the moose fall through into the lake in a forested area near the Vermont border, about 60 miles south of Lake Placid.

DEC reports that a bystander had watched the moose walk out onto Lake Abanakee and fall through the ice approximately 200 feet from the town beach.

"There’s no training manual for getting moose out of the ice,” a state officer said. Read more at straitstimes.com.

Police called in the help of trained DEC staff to get the moose out of the water. DEC Rangers Evan Nahor and Matt Savarie used jet sleds to keep themselves from falling through the ice as they cut a passage through the ice from where the moose fell into the water to the shore.

Forest rangers and an Environmental Conservation Police officer used ice rescue training, cutting a channel in the ice to guide the moose to safety.

State Department of Environmental Conservation officials rescued a moose that had broken through the ice on Lake Abanakee in Hamilton County. Dressed in cold-water rescue gear, the officers ventured out onto the ice.
