Mayor Eric Adams announced a new plan Wednesday to help address the issue of of homeless people with mental illness​.

The five-year investment will bring the New York City Department of Homeless Services (DHS) street programming budget to over $350 million in FY25 and $400 million once fully implemented, which will represent the largest annual allotment for sheltering homeless individuals in city history.

City plans to build a live-in “safe space” care facility for homeless people with serious mental illness who are repeatedly treated and discharged from city hospitals, Mayor Eric Adams said Wednesday.

Mayor Adams says that under the new "Bridge to Home" plan, NYC Health + Hospitals will offer patients with serious mental illness who are ready for discharge from the hospital but do not have a place to go intensive treatment and comprehensive support.
