Once the monkey is fully recovered, the zoo will work with the Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Wildlife Confiscations Network to find her a home in an accredited zoo or sanctuary, where she can grow up in a troop of other spider monkeys.

A baby spider monkey that was seized during a traffic stop along a Central California highway earlier this week is now in the care of the Oakland Zoo.

Around 8PM on December 30th, California Highway Patrol pulled over a driver for speeding his Rolls Royce Ghost down Highway 99. According to a CHP Madera County’s Facebook post, the driver was “found to be under the influence and placed under arrest for DUI.” Inside the roughly $400,000 luxury car, authorities found an unexpected passenger.
