The Los Angeles Angels and versatile veteran infielder Kevin Newman are nearing a deal, league sources said Thursday. Newman, 31, had a 1.4 fWAR last season, his best since 2019, built largely on the back of terrific defense at shortstop and second base.

Kevin Newman will be playing for a fourth team in four seasons, joining the Los Angeles Angels after stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cincinnati Reds and Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Los Angeles Angels have been one of the busiest teams this offseason, and just made another splash in free agency.

but when coupled with plus defense and above-average baserunning skills it’s enough to make Newman a useful role player who can help any club that’s short on infield depth — a description that currently fits the Angels to a tee.
