The Trump administration offered two million federal workers eight months of pay in exchange for their resignation, sparking confusion about what the buyouts mean for workers and whether they’re even legal.

Federal workers who don’t want to return to the office are being offered buyouts, according to a memo posted to the US Office of Personnel Management’s website Tuesday night.

The White House expects 5% to 10% of federal employees to accept buyouts. Trump has issued a return-to-office mandate, which could be a deciding factor for employees who resign. The offering also coincides with efforts to unravel diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and make it easier to fire civil servants.
