A Port Orange surfer who apparently hit his head on a sandbar and then got tangled up under the Sunglow Pier in Daytona Beach Shores has died, according to a GoFundMe page for him.

A Volusia County surfer who was in the hospital after a surfing accident has died, the man’s friend told WKMG News6 on Wednesday.

Tragedy struck at Daytona Beach last Friday, as Florida surfer Jorge Alvarado suffered fatal injuries while riding some waves. According to reports, Alvarado smashed his head on a sandbar and then got tangled with a pier support.

Jorge Alvarado, who was on life support after suffering a serious injury while surfing in Daytona Beach, Florida, has passed away. Alvarado was 49 years old.
